Calvin Buggs

Calvin Buggs, age 85, of Grand Rapids, fell asleep in death on Saturday, August 5, 2017.  Calvin was born on January 9, 1932, in Houlka, Mississippi, to Jack Rucker and Ellan Buggs-Splunge.  He liked to fish, watch westerns, listen to the blues, garden and play pool.  Although he was quiet, he most of all loved to socialize with his friends.  He could always be seen wearing a fresh cap and—on special occasions—some shined-up cowboy boots and freshly-pressed Wranglers.  Calvin moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1969.  There he owned several businesses, including C and L Records and Brina’s Auto Shop.  He enjoyed studying the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses, and he was baptized in 1986. Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, three brothers, his daughter, Lisa, and his oldest son, Calvin Jr.  He is remembered by his wife, Lula; children, Sandra and Fifi of New York, Sophia Hilliard, Lolita Buggs, Derrick Gibbs, Sabrina and Brandon Blackwell, Darnell Gibbs; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many dear friends and family. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 12, 1:00 pm at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Brother Jeff Geerling officiating.  Relatives and friends may meet the family on Saturday, August 12, from 12:00 noon-1:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
