Betty Jean Goorhouse

Betty Jean Goorhouse, age 87, of Grandville, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, July 9, 2023. Betty was raised on a farm in Mason, Michigan along with her siblings, and graduated from Dansville High School. She earned her undergraduate degree in education from MSU and her master’s degree from GVSU. Many children were positively impacted throughout her 38-year teaching career, most of which was spent at Hudsonville High School and Middle School. Betty cherished spending time with her family and adored her grandchildren. She was their biggest supporter and attended all of their school and sporting events. She embodied all of the qualities of a great Home Economics and English teacher. She was an excellent seamstress, talented cook, avid reader, and a mentor and influence to many. She also enjoyed volunteering her time at the Hudsonville Public Library repairing books so that they could be loved by all again. She will be remembered for her quick-wittedness, patience, and her willingness to help others. Betty’s legacy will be the kindness, selflessness, and compassion she shared with everyone. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Ruth Bissell; brother, William Bissell and dear friend, Evelyn Wilson. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Pamela (John) Lapham; grandchildren, Adriana and Drake Lapham; siblings, Mary Shaw, Liz Tesch, Sharon Rogers; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 21, 2023 at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, Grandville, MI 49418 with Pastor Dennis Gilbert officiating. Private burial will take place at Georgetown Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family for visitation on Thursday, July 20 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and also one hour prior to the service on Friday.
