Barbara Coates

Barbara Hope Coates, age 84, of Jenison, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. Barbara was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend. She was caring, strong-willed, and devoted to those she loved. Barbara especially enjoyed camping with her family, where she created many lasting memories.

She had a creative spirit and took great joy in using her talents in a variety of ways. Barbara found happiness in the simple pleasures of life—sewing, knitting, making pillows, painting ceramics, and coloring. She also loved her pets and could often be found peacefully watching the birds outside her window.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Gordon Coates; and her daughter, Terry Lee Coates. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Terry Coates, John Coates, Bill Coates, Mark Coates, Paul and Gayle Coates; grandchildren, Crystal Coates, Marcus Coates, Nathan Coates, and Kyle Coates; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24, at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW with Pastor Aaron Westhouse officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
