Alfred J. Wier

Alfred Jay Wier, age 94, of Wyoming, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 1, 2019.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy.  He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Mary and John Brubaker, Tom and Deb Wier; grandchildren, Jennifer and Chris Hall, Sarah and Nolan Erickson, Ryan Brubaker, Brett Wier, Kelli  and Tim Santangelo; great-grandchildren, Luci, Wyatt, Carson, and Kairi Hall, Sebastian and Calvin Erickson, Simon and Henry Santangelo, nieces, Barb and Tom Cey, Carol and Tom Gillentine; and special cousin, Phyllis Wier.  Alfred proudly served our country as a member of the United States Army during WWII. After serving three years in the Aleutian Islands and Japan, he graduated from Michigan State University, the first in his family to graduate college.  After his graduation from MSU, he taught at Bellaire High School, Constantine High School, and then to Rogers High School where he taught science and coached football.  He served in the latter years as Dean of Students and Athletic Director.  He spent 36 years with Wyoming Public Schools, and was the first person honored in the Rogers Hall of Fame.  He wore his name of “Coach” with pride.  Alfred was also a longtime member of Beverly Reformed Church, where he served as elder, Sunday School teacher, and enjoyed singing in the choir.  Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 6, at 11:00 am at Beverly Reformed Church, 2141 Porter St. SW, Wyoming, 49519, with Pastor Shane Floyd and Pastor Chris Hall officiating.  Interment Blythefield Memory Gardens.  Relatives and friends may meet the family Wednesday from 6-8 pm at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville) 4145 Chicago Dr. SW and one hour prior to the funeral on Thursday at the church.  Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Wyoming Public Schools Athletic Fund.
