Sandra Lee Getting (Battjes), age 76, passed away at home on May 15, 2020, surrounded by loved ones, after a five-year battle with a rare form of cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Dorothy Battjes of Saugatuck. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Jack Getting; her siblings, Sherry (David) Battjes-Howlett, Linda (Doug) DeWindt, Debra Battjes, and Tom (Suzy) Battjes; her sisters-in-law, Rosalie Swenson and Laura Ingalls; her five children, Jeffrey (Kris) Getting, Julie Hatley, James Getting, Jennifer (Tyler) Getting, Jameslyn and Jill (Dirk) Hofman; 13 grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends. Sandy grew up in the heyday of the ‘50s, roller skating, waterskiing, and cruising with her friends. She graduated from Wyoming Park High School and devoted her life to raising her family. Sandy loved traveling with family and friends, spending time at Lake Michigan and at the ocean. She marvelled at the feel of the sand, the sound of the waves, and the glorious sunsets. She cherished the moments cheering at her grandchildren’s sports events, dance recitals, and musical performances. Sandy was an avid jigsaw puzzler and loved to play board games with her children and grandchildren. She was a trusted and loyal friend, establishing lifelong connections from grade school, and later through Bunco clubs, ceramics classes, basket classes, bus trips and other activities. Sandy loved to host family parties for holidays and birthdays and will be dearly missed when we gather to celebrate again. She taught us all the importance of family, the value of hard work, the necessity of a plitz drawer, and to love each other even when it’s hard. And for that we will always be grateful. A private family service will be held at this time, with a larger memorial gathering to be held at a later date when circumstances allow. She will be laid to rest at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, near her grandparents, as she wished.
