Myron “Mike” Baas

Myron “Mike” Baas, age 81, of Hudsonville, went home to his Lord on Tuesday, March 24, 2020.  He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Fenna Baas; and his sister and brother-in-law, Freda and Abe Kamphouse. Mike was the life partner of Patricia “Pat” Baas for the last 60 years.  Together they modeled their commitment by devoting their time, talents, and leadership, sharing their faith, and creating a business enterprise and culture of respect and high expectations.  Mike was an inspirational father and extraordinary role model to his children, Michael and Kim Baas, and Lori Baas.  Both children have continued his commitment to social justice by dedicating their lives to education and human service.  He was also the celebrated grandfather to his three grandchildren, Aidan, Isabel, and Baxter, who learned the importance of his commitment to his faith. He will also be remembered by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Cindy Brunink, Bonnie and Daniel Schripsema, Phil and Carol Brunink, Brian and Tarin Brunink, Tom and Carolyn Brunink; several loving nieces and nephews. Mike was a successful small business owner in Grandville and the overwhelming support of his staff and clients throughout his career and especially during his diagnosis of leukemia is a testament to his values, empathy, and leadership.  Mike lived his life every day to honor his belief in Jesus Christ. Private family services will be held followed by a time of visitation from 2-4 pm on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at Ridgewood Church, 1571 Baldwin St., Jenison 49428. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Spectrum Health Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion or Spectrum Hospice.

Dear Pat, I just heard of Mike’s passing. What a wonderful man and a wonderful couple. My hair was styled and world issues discussed and solved through the years. I already miss your warm hospitality and loving care in Christ’s name. Continued Blessings to you and your dear family until we meet again. Love Gale Dunn Volkerding and Dale Volkerding

Pat, Michael & Lori, I was stunned to see the news of Mike’s passing in the Sunday paper! My last haircut was Feb 13 and he seemed to be doing well. He said “see you in 5 weeks”. That appointment was then cancelled due to Coronavirus. So I was waiting to re-schedule in April and hadn’t heard anything about him not doing well. Mike was my barber since 1974, but I considered him more of a friend. We enjoyed catching up with people we both knew, especially from the former Bethel CRC. He will be sorely missed! Our only comfort is knowing that we will see him again in heaven one day. Deb and I would surely like to attend the memorial service when it is announced. For now we would like to extend our sincere sympathies to the entire Baas family. With our love, Phil& Deb Ouwinga

I am deeply saddened to read of Mike’s passing. He was a master with a scissors and a razor. Over twenty years he rarely missed the opportunity to tell me that my hair had an independent streak to match its owner. And then he’d laugh. Mike was a joy to talk with as we discussed current events. We shared a passion for faith and social justice. Grandkids and children updates were never missed. He was a wonderful sounding board and I hope I provided that for him as well. Pat, Michael and Kim, Lori and each of you bright, accomplished grandkids, my heart goes out to you. He was one in a million. Sally VanNoord

Dear Pat, I can't begin to express how sad we were to see the news of Mike's death. I (Mary) so enjoyed my appointments with Mike, hearing news of your family, sharing stories about work and church, and just being in the presence of someone who exemplified life in union with Christ. I will miss him so much. Our prayers are with you and your family. May you feel God's peace and presence in the coming days and weeks. Much love, Skip and Mary Vanden Berg

Pat and family - Mike was a gentle and thoughtful soul who was passionate about his family, his team, his clients, his faith and his work! I first met Mike in 1980 when I moved back to West Michigan and he was recommended to me. Our monthly haircuts were always filed with stories about our families, our lives and of course Calvin College basketball. Like many I will miss him but hope to see him again in the future. May this be a faithful family time for all of you. Larry Andrus

Mike started out as my barber in 1972 when I was an intern at Blodgett Hospital when his shop was in Gaslight Village and over the years became a friend that I could chat with about anything. We talked small college basketball, medical care, and crises in our own families. I miss him already. Peace and love, MIke.

MIke was so much more than than the only stylist who could give me a good haircut. Over 40 years, he was a sounding board and confidant. He gave me wisdom for jobs, faith and raising my children. I'll miss those discussions even more than a great haircut.

Dear Pat, We were stunned when we heard about the passing if Mike. Pat, My sympathy to you and your family. I have loved knowing the two of you these many years and will deeply miss my monthly haircut and beard trim with MIke. While I’ve never met your children or grandchildren I feel like I know your family well from all the conversations I’ve enjoyed while the master performed his miracles on my head and face. We rejoice with the knowledge that he has joined our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. My Prayers are for the comfort of the Holy Spirit to be with you during this time of morning.
