Martin Slagter, age 97, of Jenison, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 15, 2019.  Martin was a WWII veteran, serving in the army infantry in the Philippines and Okinawa and also received the Bronze Star.  He retired after 38 years as a driver for Tucker Truck Lines.  His favorite hobby was gardening.  Mart’s dogs, Boston Terriers, were a lifelong passion.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace.  He will be lovingly remembered by his children, William Harrison, Dave Slagter, Crystal and Vern Umstead; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Cindy Lee, Nick and Lindsay Umstead (Sophia, Layla, Violet), Jonathan Umstead, James Slagter; and many nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at 11 a.m. at Eighth Reformed Church, 841 Burton St. SW, Wyoming, with Pastor Dave Brower and Rev. Harry Koops officiating.  Interment will be held at Grandville Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may meet the family on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4145 Chicago Dr. SW, Grandville.  The family expresses their great appreciation to Grace Hospice and the staff at American House for their loving and exceptional care.  Memorial contributions may be made to American House - Maplewood Manor.

I am so sorry to hear that Martin passed away , it was a joy taking care of his needs while staying with us at American House , Martin was a good friend to all of us he will be misses tremendously his memories will remain and I have only good ones goodbye my friend ANGIE

RIP dear Martin!! I so enjoyed having the privilege of caring for you at Maplewood. Even though I am retired now, I still think of you often and look back fondly of our many conversations and the laughter we shared. My thoughts and prayers to your entire family. And thanks for always taking such good care of my Studebaker!!!! Godspeed!!!
