Donald Eugene Grashorn

Donald Eugene Grashorn, age 67, of Alto, passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2018 after a courageous fight against cancer. He was preceded in death by his mother, Laurene; father, Eugene; and brother, Tom. Born on June 29, 1951 in Kalamazoo, MI, Don graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School (69’) and Western Michigan University (73’) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Horticulture.  Don worked his way through college mowing lawns. After graduating he enjoyed many years of employment at Wedel’s Nursery and Garden Center in Kalamazoo as a nursery manager. One of his greatest accomplishments was co-owning and operating Enchanted Gardens, a nursery and landscape company, in the early 1990’s. Don was an avid gardener and a Michigan Certified Nurseryman. Recently, he really enjoyed his work as a school bus driver for Caledonia Public Schools.  He will be remembered for his generous spirit, incredible work ethic, and love for his family. Don will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Pam; his children, Patrick (Nikki) Grashorn, Katelyn (Torrey) Horness, Christopher (Jeannie) Grashorn; grandchildren, Landon Grashorn, Harrison Grashorn, Abigail Horness, and grandson on the way; siblings, Bill (Jeannie) Grashorn, Barb (Bruce) DeVries; and many extended family members. The family would like to thank the staff at Spectrum Health Hospice, especially Leslie Andrews, for their continuing support and care of Don. According to his wishes cremation has taken place.  A celebration of his life will be held Friday 11 a.m. at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Kentwood, with Pastor Dennis Gilbert and Chaplain Tod Clark officiating.  Interment Alaska Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may meet the family Friday from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service.  Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Spectrum Health Hospice.

We only knew Don through his son Chris, that wonderful young man who married our niece, Jean (Closson) Grashorn. Our hearts ache for them and the entire Grashorn family. We are sorry for this painful loss. I will remember him as I last saw him—lighting up the room with his good looks and great personality at Jean and Chris’ wedding. He has left a great legacy—his family.
