Bailey Kathryn Emelander

Bailey Kathryn Emelander, like the true maverick that she was, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2016, on her own terms.  She was preceded in death by her father, Scott Emelander, who only encouraged her unapologetic attitude, and her grandparents, Donald and Jean Emelander.  Bailey has touched countless lives around her and while not always in the best of health, was always excited to be an active member of whatever community she was in.  She began attending the Ottawa Area Center shortly after her third birthday.  Bailey thrived at school; she loved being with her friends and the OAC staff.  Her sassy spirit and mischievous smile was well loved.  She made so many friends over her short time with us and has enriched the lives of so many people.  Bailey spent the last ten months living at Harbor House Ministries in Jenison.  She truly loved being “on her own” and the Harbor House staff quickly fell in love with her free spirit.  She will be missed by those who knew her only passively and more by those who were an active part of her everyday life.  One of her favorite things to do was to spend time with her older brother, Brad, watching scary movies.  As much as she was the light of his life, she LOVED being with her big brother.  She is survived by her mother, Kathy Emelander; brother, Brad Emelander; her loving grandparents, Larry and Ann Ratkowski (Papa and Granny); as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. A memorial service will held Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 1:30 pm at Ottawa Area Center, 10160 96th Ave., Allendale, with Terry Goldberg officiating.   Relatives and friends may meet the family Sunday from 1-1:30 pm prior to the service and may join the family following the service for refreshments and fellowship all at the Ottawa Area Center.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be given to the family to help offset funeral expenses, Harbor House Ministries or My Team Triumph.

My heart breaks WIDE OPEN for you. I know how much you loved Bailey and she wasn't a BIG part of your life, she WAS your life! I pray that our God in Heaven comforts and consoles you and shows you how to begin to function with a new/different life without Bailey. It's not going to be easy...I'm sorry for that. I'm also sorry that I will no longer be in Michigan, by the service time, and will be unable to attend and give you a BIG ... llloooooonnnggg hug. Please know that you will be in my prayers and if you want to just get away....mi casa es tu casa. Just get there and back and I've got the rest, OK? If there is anything I can do to help, (unfortunately from afar) even if it's just to listen, PLEASE let me know. Love ya, girl!

Kathy and Brad, you have my deepest sympathy. I got to have the pleasure of meeting Bailey while driving her to school. She was a sneaky little princess as she played her jokes on me all the while having that grin of knowing that I would react quickly. I loved her spunk and attitude. Bonnie

They say that angels are only visible for a short period of time. I am glad that I got the chance to know her. I am sure that we will all see signs of Bailey like a butterfly that continues to hang around, a hummingbird that refuses to fly away or a little fawn that finds it way into your yard. Keep your eyes open for her. She is hear she is all around us. We are so sorry for your loss. Hugs going out across the miles to all of you. Love Valerie, Tim, Zoey and Maddie Myer (Ratkowski)
