William Arthur Ver Hulst, age 78, of Wyoming went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, February 22, 2019. Bill’s life was centered on his personal relationship with Jesus Christ and he carried it out in all that he did. He had a heart to serve. Bill served Grace Church as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, youth leader, after-school program volunteer and mentor. He oversaw the finances for the Reformed Church of America for many years. He was the longest serving Wyoming City Council member having served 25 years before retiring due to health issues. He also served on the Wyoming School Board, Westown Jubilee Housing Board, and was a longtime supporter of Words of Hope Ministries. Family has always been extremely important to Bill. He was an exceptional partner and excellent caregiver to his wife. In the last two years of her life, Bill was her round-the-clock caregiver and companion. He was an outstanding dad, grandpa and great grandpa. When he was on outings with the grandchildren, it was always hard to tell who was having more fun. Born and raised in Holland, Michigan, Bill graduated from Holland High School. After a brief stint in the National Guard, he graduated from Davenport College with an associate’s degree. He then attended Ferris State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He was offered a scholarship to attend Michigan State University, where he earned a master’s degree in accounting before becoming a Certified Public Accountant. Bill took a position at Seidman and Seidman Accounting before moving to Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, where he spent more than two decades as Chief Financial Officer. He also served as an auditor at Priority Health. Bill was always a huge sports fan and was a huge baseball fan. He was very faithful to the Chicago White Sox and Michigan State Spartans. Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Karen; parents, Harold and Eva Ver Hulst. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Clark and Meribeth Ver Hulst, Julie and Brett Dyke, Bart and Rosemary Ver Hulst; grandchildren, Jordan (Julie) Ver Hulst, Ashleigh (Austin) Bettis, Zack Ver Hulst, Steven and Evan Dyke, Harrison Ver Hulst; great-grandchildren, Kynlee Ver Hulst, Amayah Bettis, Amari Bettis, Caroline Ver Hulst; brother, John (Jean) Ver Hulst; sisters, Lois (Jack) Kelley, Phyllis (Bruce) Moody, Shirley (James) Wissink. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2019, at Grace Reformed Church, 3330 Burlingame Avenue SW, Wyoming, with Rev. Rick Oppenhuizen officiating. Interment Georgetown Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Thursday, February 28, from 4-7 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home (Grandville), 4145 Chicago Drive SW, and Friday, March 1, at the church from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to Grace Reformed Church.
