Sylvester Clarence Herron, Jr. was the first child of Tyree Hall and Sylvester Clarence Herron, Sr. born in Wilson, Arkansas on March 30, 1935. He received his education from Mark T. Skinner Elementary and Richard T. Crane High School in Chicago, Illinois. Sy joined the United States Marine Corps in 1952, where he served as a Projectionist as one of his many duties until his Honorable Discharge.
Sy enjoyed Jazz music; his favorite artist was Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan and Joe Williams, to name a few. He also enjoyed music by Gospel Great Mahalia Jackson. Sy was an avid Story-Teller/Historian, usually talking about his many adventures to his children, Aunt Lera and sisters. Sy also enjoyed Boxing and watching Black/White Westerns. Through the years Sy was employed with House of Stainless, City of Chicago, Zenith, R.L. Polk, and MCI.
Sy peacefully departed this life on Monday, January 14, 2019 surrounded by his wife Terry and stepson Johnnie. Sy will fondly be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents Sylvester C. Herron, Sr. and Tyree Shelmon, daughter LaWanda Herron and sons Alonzo and Andre Herron, his brothers Paul Myers and Charles Shelmon, Jr., sisters Onealious Colbert, Vera Porter and Beverly Shelmon.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife Terry; his children: Antonio Herron of Rockford, IL, Michelle Herron of Chicago, IL; stepchildren: Archie Freeny of Traverse City, MI, Kelvin Freeny and Johnnie Quarles both of Grand Rapids, MI, and Cecila Jenkins, Lolita Jenkins and Cedric Jenkins all of Chicago, IL; twenty-three grandchildren and one great grandchild; his siblings: Merdas Scott-McAfee of Linwood, IL, Barbara Myers of Grand Rapids, MI, Loyola Williams of Chicago, IL, Charlotte Buckhanan of Matteson, IL, Diane Cartwright of Cedar Springs MI, and Suzette Shelmon-Murchison of Caledonia, MI; sister-in-law, Gladys Myers of Chicago, IL and Debbie Shelmon of Grand Rapids, MI; brothers and sisters-in-law: Thom (Faith) LaCount of Hesperia, MI, George (Linda) Smith of Fremont, MI, Linda (Larry) Summey of Shelby, MI, Joy Dash of Walkerville, MI, John Schmidt of Fremont, MI, Daniel (Mala) Schmidt of Fremont, MI; one aunt, Lera (James) Jackson of White Cloud, MI; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Matthysse-Kuiper-DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4031 Clyde Park SW, Wyoming. Interment Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet the family Friday from 4-7 pm at the funeral home, as well as on Saturday from 10 am -12 pm prior to the service.
